The 2016 Belmont Stakes was the 148th running of the race and was held on June 11, 2016. The winner of the race was Creator, who gave jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. his first career Triple Crown race victory. The race had a total purse of $1.5 million, with the winner receiving $800,000. Other notable horses in the race included Destin, Lani, and Exaggerator, who had won both the Preakness Stakes and the Santa Anita Derby earlier in the year. The Belmont Stakes is the third and final leg of the American Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing, following the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes.
